Keeping your bike in top shape doesn’t require a full workshop - just a little regular attention.

As a mobile bike mechanic, I see countless repairs that could have easily been avoided with basic upkeep. Proper lubrication and preventative care are the keys to a smooth, quiet, and long-lasting ride.

First, let’s talk about your chain. It’s the heart of your drivetrain, but it’s a major collector of road grime. The golden rule? Less is more. Apply just a small dribble of lube to the inside of the chain as it rotates once round the cassette, let it sink in, and wipe off any excess.

Over-lubricating creates a sticky mess that attracts dust, dirt, and grit, quickly turning your lube into an abrasive grinding paste that wears down your components.

Next up: threads and bolts and seatposts. Components like your pedals, seatpost, and bottom bracket interface are constantly exposed to moisture and road spray. A classic mistake is ignoring them until they seize up completely.

Unscrewing your pedals and removing your seatpost, cleaning them up and applying a fresh layer of grease once a year prevents galvanic corrosion and ensures you won't have to fight a frozen pedal or stuck seatpost later on.Regular maintenance keeps your ride effortless, saves you money on replacement parts, and keeps you safe on the road

Finally, checking if anything's loose is a great way to learn more about your bike while protectung it from the problems which come from wobbly components. A gentle twist on bolt heads across the bike - even with a standard multi-tool - will make you more confident in your machine and prevent expensive repairs later.
